Vanilla Cultivation

In the village of Sudaji in North Bali, Wima collaborates with the local cooperative Petani Harapan Keluarga (PHK). Each member of this agricultural organization cultivates between 50 and 200 vanilla plants on their own land. Wima provides advice on the cultivation method.

Through Wima’s addition of specific knowledge to the cultivation project, the vanilla will form flowers earlier and more abundantly. This allows for quicker harvesting than usual and with a higher yield. By cultivating vanilla together with all members, everyone shares in the profits. Furthermore, this cultivation method is less susceptible to diseases and similar risks compared to monoculture.

The vanilla beans are collected and fermented locally. This generates additional income. At a later stage, the fermented beans can be processed locally into products. Examples include vanilla essence (link in Dutch, consider finding an English equivalent if needed), or products for the cosmetics and food industries.
